The American Buffalo is actually a Bison, not a buffalo. But that is just the science of it. Politically it is OK to call them buffalo. The Oakland Zoo received 14 females from the Blackfeet nation, and it turns out many of them were pregnant. So by the summer of 2018, there were 10 calves running around. They are cinnamon in color for the first two months, and therefore referred to as "Red Dogs". Seven of the offspring and four of the adults were sent back in May 2019 and we received two new bulls to join the remaining herd as part of a breeding program. The bison returned to the Blackfeet Nation were released into the wild. Bison are on exhibit at the Oakland Zoo on the California Trail. The Bison roam all the way from the SF Bay Overlook down towards the elephant exhibit in the Main Zoo.
