Mama bear and her three boys were rescued from being put down for the simple crime of breaking into a house. Seeing as how that is where the good food is, it is up to the humans to keep that from happening. These bears were just doing what bears are inclined to do.
Unfortunately, one of the young males had medical issues and did not survive the first year at the zoo. The other two fellows are doing just fine, as is mama bear.
By the way, Black Bears are not always black. In fact, mama bear has gotten quite blonde.
Black Bears are on exhibit at the Oakland Zoo on the California Trail.
The Black Bears now have a second section of their exhibit which allows photography without fencing or glass in the way.
This was mama bear on her first day on exhibit. One of the zookeepers referred to this as her "Glamour Shot".
This one was used for a 10 foot wide banner advertising the new name of the Conservation Society of California (formerly the East Bay Zoological Society). One banner placed by the entrance and another near the rides area.

Celebrating their 1st birthday with birthday cake. Well, bear appropriate cake. Meaning it is made mostly out of sweet potatoes.
No 5 second rule for a bear! Even on the ground it is not going to go to waste.
The boys decided to explore the tree on their first day out in the exhibit. They, and mom, spend a considerable amount of time in the trees.
Do you suppose she climbs up this high just to get away from her three boys, even if only for a few minutes?
She reminds me of a Baseball Coach or Manager, watching the game from the dugout.
