Gray Wolves

All of the Gray Wolves in California were killed off or chased away. A few years back one came down from Oregon to find a female. He failed since he was the only wolf around, so he went back, found a female, had a family, and now his son has brought his family to California just below the Oregon border. Our wolves were born and raised in captivity, but they make great ambassadors for their species and in the Spring of 2019 they mated and produced four puppies. Two male and two female. So the Oakland Zoo now has a pack of wolves! The Gray Wolves are on exhibit at the Oakland Zoo on the California Trail. The wolves have three large connected areas to roam, and spend quite a bit of time out of the sight of zoo visitors. They are not shy, or bothered by humans, they are just smart enough to spend warm days in the shade, which often makes it difficult to see them.

This is our male Gray Wolf. The zookeepers tease that he walks on stilts because his legs are so much longer than the female's legs.

So where exactly do the tales of the big bad wolf come from? Look at this guy and tell me there is anything to be afraid of. If you went into his territory, he would go the other way. Of course, he doesn't really have a problem finding food, water, shelter or companionship. His life is quite idyllic compared to most wolves.

This is our female Gray Wolf standing in her favorite spot. It is pretty much the highest spot for her to survey her territory. She has a lot thicker coat than the male because he is from Southern California and she is from Montana. Even after her second winter in Oakland, she still has a thicker coat than her mate.

He likes her.
